CAMP DESCRIPTIONS

AGES 3-4
Camps are 9:00am - 11:30am, Monday-Friday 

Feeding Frenzy – It’s dinnertime in the animal world and you might just be surprised what you find on the menu!  Let’s explore the different kinds of food animals eat and discover why a lion has such sharp teeth while some animals have no teeth at all.  This week, we will see what a meal at the zoo looks like - fish, worms, and crickets…coming right up!
Camp Dates: June 6-10, July 11-15

Monkey Mania – Swing on over to the zoo this week for a wild time in the jungle with some silly monkey friends!   Kids are encouraged to “monkey around” in this camp as we discover how monkeys move, what they eat, and where they live.  An added bonus - Curious George is in town for the summer with some great hands-on activities for kids to explore!
Camp Dates: June 13-17, July 18-22

Ocean Commotion – What’s all that commotion in the ocean?  From giant blue whales to small, colorful fish, the ocean is full of so much life!  This week we will dive below the surface and discover what it’s like to live a life under water.

Squeak, Squawk, and Squeal – Animals talk to each other in very special ways that we humans don’t always understand.  This week we will learn a new language – that of the animal world!   Let’s purr, roar, and grrrr and discover what all those sounds might mean to an animal.  
Camp Dates: June 27-July 1, Aug 1-5

The Nose Knows – Animals use their senses to find food, stay safe, and much more!  This week we will explore our own senses of smell, sight, taste, touch, and hearing and learn why certain senses are so important to different animals.  
Camp Dates: July 5-8 (no camp on July 4), Aug 8-12
Cost: Week of July 4th (Pro-rated for 4 days):  $72 member/$104 non-member

Wild Wings – Ever wonder what it would be like to fly?  Some birds do it every day, while other birds use their wings for something totally different!  Join us to learn all about birds and what makes these egg-laying, feathered creatures so special.    
Camp Dates: June 6-10, July 11-15
Cost: Half Day- $90 member/$130 non-member, Full Day-$180 member/$260 non-member

Baby Beasts – Did you know that mom alligators carry baby gators in their mouths or on their backs for safety?  We were all babies once and needed a little extra love and care.  Let’s learn about the youngsters of the animal world and how they grow up.

Monkey Business – The most curious of monkeys is making a grand appearance at the zoo this summer! Join Curious George for some hands-on storybook adventures while also learning all about different monkeys in the wild and some of their silly habits.

Tropical Treasures – Raindrops falling, critters calling - there are so many sights and sounds in the rainforest!  Through song, stories, art, and more, kids will travel from the rainforest floor to the very treetops of this dense habitat, meeting many animals along the way.

Herp, Herp, Hooray! – Join us to discover the slimy and scaly creatures of the amphibian and reptile worlds.  Snakes, lizards, turtles, and frogs are just to name a few.  They may not be soft, cute, and cuddly but they can do amazing things like smell with their tongue or absorb water through their skin!  These animals are all very special in their own way!
Camp Dates:  July 5-8 (no camp on July 4), Aug 8-12

Busy Bees – Did you know that much of what we eat would not exist without the help from our amazing pollinators such as bees? These small insects make a BIG difference.  In this camp, we will explore the life of a honey bee, check out some of our butterfly gardens around the zoo, and learn what the buzzzzzzzz on saving pollinators is all about.

Grossology – Did you know a gecko can lick its own eyeball? Discover what's slimy, slippery, sloppy, and stinky at the Blank Park Zoo! We'll learn all about the animals at the Zoo and some of their not-so-pleasant quirks. Join us for a week of messy mayhem and foul fun as we uncover what's so gross about the Zoo!
Camp Dates: June 13-17, July 18-22

Dip and Dive – Water we doing this week?  We’re exploring the deep blue sea!  Come join some of our flippered and finned friends at the Blank Park Zoo and discover how these amazing animals are cared for and what life below the water’s surface is really like.  The zoo animals won’t be the only ones making a splash!  Campers will also enjoy some wet and wild water activities to cool down from the summer heat.

Camo Critters – Come join us for a little Hide and Seek this week as we discover animals that are really hard to find, even when they aren’t “hiding” behind anything more than their own skin and fur!  Bugs that look like leaves, feathers that blend with trees, these sneaky creatures may just fool us all.

Night-Time Explorers – What if you could see in the dark, hear the faintest sounds, or smell odors you never knew existed? Animals that come out at night couldn’t survive without some of these amazing senses. Come discover how nocturnal animals find food, stay safe, and get around in the dark.

Jaws and Claws – My, what sharp teeth you have! Life out in the wild can be a very dangerous place, so some animals have handy tools to keep them safe.  Let your imagination run wild this week as we learn how animals protect themselves and design our own unique animals with special defenses.
Camp Dates: June 6-10, July 11-15
Cost: $180 member/$260 non-member

Who Dung It? – Animals in the wild love to try to hide but, with a closer look, you will find that they also leave us clues everywhere. From scat to tracks, we will search for the signs that expose which animals have been around the zoo and what they have been up to.  This week you will receive a special badge and learn how to be a Zoo Detective!
Camp Dates: June 13-17, July 18-22

Wet and Wild – This wonderful, wet week will wow you with all things water! We will visit the seals, sea lions, penguins, and aquariums.  Along the way, we will discover how the zookeepers ensure that our water-loving friends have healthy underwater habitats. And we will make sure we stay wet with water activities!

Africa Adventures – Ever dream of going on a safari?  Come on over to the zoo and learn about some of the magnificent animals that live among the tall grasses of the Savannah.  This diverse continent inhabits not only the tallest but the fastest and the heaviest animals on this planet!  
Camp Dates: June 27-July 1, Aug 1-5
Cost: $180 member/$260 non-member

Optional Overnight for Africa Adventures Camp – Spend the night at the zoo and learn about some nocturnal animals from Africa. Instead of going home Thursday, camp out in the Discovery Center and take part in some extra fun evening activities!  
Date: June 16, July 21
Cost: $45 per camper. Dinner and breakfast will be provided.

Eco-Rangers – Let’s help make this planet a better place for all living things! Gear up this week to make a big difference. Recycling, picking up trash, and planting gardens are just a few rules of an Eco-Ranger.  Earn your eco-badge this week by learning about how to BE GREEN and how small changes in your life can help save animals around the world!

Zoo Tycoon – Have you ever wondered how YOU would run a zoo?  Well, now’s your chance!  This week, you’ll learn all about how Blank Park Zoo operates and work as a team to design a zoo of your own!  You’ll meet some of the staff and animals at the zoo and discover behind-the-scenes secrets that make the Blank Park Zoo Iowa’s wildest adventure!
Camp Dates: June 13-17
Cost: $180 member/$260 non-member

Photo Safari – Many pictures tell a story. Can you capture the details of an animal’s story with just the click of a button?  Gain inspiration for your own photographs by exploring some famous photos of animals in the wild.  This week we will create a blog to share the animal’s stories and feature your photographs.
Camp Dates: June 27-July 1
Cost: $180 member/$260 non-member

Just Chillin’ – How would you survive in sub-zero temperatures with ice, snow, and bitter cold winds? Polar animals have very useful adaptations for life in this not-so-pleasant habitat.  Join us as we explore Antarctica and the unique animals that thrive there.   Pack a bag, bundle up, and join us as we travel down South to…the Kansas City Zoo for a slumber party with the penguins!
Camp Dates: July 11-15
Cost: $260 member/$380 non-member

Christmas in July – Toys aren’t just for kids!  Our zoo animals need toys too.  Enriching the lives of animals at the zoo is not always easy, but it is an important part of a zookeeper’s duties.  During camp, you will get a chance to work with a zookeeper and make toys for all sorts of animals.  And, the best part - watching the animals play!
Camp Dates: July 25-29
Cost: $180 member/$260 non-member

Myth Busters – Can porcupines really shoot their quills? Do whales really talk to each other? Join us as we confirm or bust some of the well-known animal myths. We'll tour the Zoo and talk with zookeepers to find out the truth behind animal lore. We will research, write, and record our very own Mythbusters episode that focuses on animals found at the Blank Park Zoo!
Camp Dates: Aug 8-12

Camps are 9:00am – 4:00pm, Monday-Friday

Junior Zookeeper – Want to learn how to be a zookeeper?  Making diets, cleaning, and keeping animals enriched are all part of what a zookeeper does every day.  You will get a chance to tour some behind-the-scenes areas and help take care of the very animals that you get to see every day at the zoo!
Camp Dates: June 20-24, July 18-22
Cost: $180 member/$260 non-member

Animal Careers – Are you interested in a career working with animals?  Each day during this camp you will get the chance to talk to a person who works with animals.  A vet, a zookeeper, an animal trainer and more!  This is a great time to learn about opportunities in the animal field!

Things to Know
Age and Grade Level
It is important to us that your child receives the best experience. As such, we hope that you will help us by honoring the age and grade level guidelines. Each camp is for children entering that grade level in the fall of 2016. Your child MUST be potty-trained to be a part of the camp.

Extra Purchases (Before/After Care, Lunch, T-shirts)
Weekly lunches, weekly before/after care, and t-shirts can all be purchased through your online registration process or at camp drop-off.  If you would like to purchase before/after care or lunches for individual days of the week, you can do so at drop-off or by calling 515-974-2588 (purchases for individual weekdays of camp are not available online).

Supervised Before/After Care
Before and after care are available from 7:30 to 9:00 am and from 4:00 to 5:30 pm for full-day campers age 5-6 and grades 1 to 7 (before care is also available to half-day campers). This service is not an extension of the camp. The cost for each supervised additional care session is $5/day am, and $5/day pm. A $5 late fee will be charged for every 15 minutes after 5:30 pm. There are no refunds for cancelling prepaid sessions.

Lunch
Children enrolled in a full-day camp will need to either bring a sack lunch or purchase a zoo lunch (if a child arrives without a sack lunch, a zoo lunch must be purchased that day). Please note that refrigeration for lunches will not be provided. A snack will be provided for our half-day and full-day camps.  Lunch is $6.25/day or $25 for the week.

Tuesday:  Hot Dog, Fruit, Cookies and Drink
Wednesday:  2 slices of cheese pizza, Apple, Cookies and Drink
Thursday:  Corn Dog Nuggets, Fruit Cup, Chips, Cookies and Drink
Friday:  Hamburger, French Fries, Apple, Cookies and Drink

T-shirts
The cost of a Summer Safari t-shirt is $10.  If a t-shirt is purchased when registering for camp online, you will receive this shirt the first day of camp.  

Drop-off/Pick-up
Check-in for each class begins 10 minutes before the start of class.
For the safety of your children, we will only release your child to the person/s you list at drop-off each day. If there are emergencies/last-minute changes, please notify our camp instructors.

Locations: 
3-4 Year Olds: Drop-off and Pick-up will occur at the Banker's Trust Classroom next to Kid’s Kingdom. Directional signs will be posted to lead you to the classroom. 

5-6 Year Olds: Drop-off will occur in Pavilion 1, located next to the Bald Eagle Exhibit. For half day pick-up, please enter the zoo through Admissions and you will be directed to the Dove Room in the Discovery Center. Full day pick-up will occur in Pavilion 1.

Grades 1 to 7: drop-off and pick-up will occur in Pavilion 1, located next to the Bald Eagle Exhibit.

Please honor our pick-up times:
Half Day: 11:30 a.m.
Full Day:  4:00 p.m.
Aftercare: Before 5:30 p.m.

Registration, Confirmation and Cancellation
Pre-registration is required for all classes. All registrations must be received at least 7 days before class starts. After your registration is processed, you will receive a confirmation. Please note that your registration is not confirmed until you receive this confirmation. After registration is complete, Blank Park Zoo adheres to a no-refund, no-credit policy. If you are unable to attend, please consider your payment a tax-deductible donation.

Please print the ticket attached to your confirmation and bring it with you the first day of camp.
