It is important to us that your child receives the best experience. As such, we hope that you will help us by honoring the age and grade level guidelines. Each camp is for children entering that grade level in the fall of 2014. Your child MUST be potty-trained to be a part of the camp.

CAMP DESCRIPTIONS

Ages 3-4
Camps are 9:00am - 11:30am, Monday-Friday

Here Kitty, Kitty – Have you ever noticed the lions and tigers act a lot like house cats do? Let’s compare cats from around the world to how they are the same and how they are different from each other and from our pet cats at home.
Camp Dates: June 9-13, July 14-18
Cost: $90 member/$128.57 non-member

Kinds of Creatures – Mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles all have interesting characteristics.  Let’s learn about how we can tell them apart and what makes each kind of creature very special.
Camp Dates: June 16-20, July 21-25
Cost: $90 member/$128.57 non-member

Who Who’s Habitat? – A dark cave, a nest high in the trees, or a tiny hole in the ground, animals live everywhere! Let’s explore the different homes and habitats for creatures large and small. Find out how and why animals live where they do.
Camp Dates: June 23-27, July 28- August 1

Reptile Rendezvous – Lizards and geckos and snakes, oh my! Some people are scared of our scaly friends but we will learn about whey they are so cool and even have a visit from our 8 foot Boa constrictor!
Camp Dates: June 30 –July 3 (no camp on July 4), August 4-8

Sally the Camel – Silly animal songs are fun to sing at the Zoo! This week we will learn songs, dance along and visit the Zoo animals we are singing about! At the end of the week, we will have a special performance for parents!

Half day camps are 9:00am-11:30pm, Full day camps are 9:00am-4:00pm

Rockin’ in the Rainforest –We might also find a few surprises, like birds that have wings but can’t fly and animals that can fly but don’t have wings! Raindrops falling, monkeys calling, frogs croaking…the rainforest is a noisy place! Let’s rock the rainforest with songs, games and exploration of all the animals and plants that make this one rockin’ habitat!

Farm Friends – This week we will learn all about barn yard animals and spend time with our farm animal friends in Kids Kingdom.  We will learn about the difference between farm animals and zoo animals and why they are both important.  A special zookeeper will show us around the barns to see how our farm animals are cared for at the Blank Park Zoo!

Clues at the Zoo! – Animals leave clues everywhere. From scat to tracks we will use special clues to figure out what animals have been around the Zoo and what they have been doing. This week you will receive a special Zoo Detective badge and learn how to be an animal detective!

Water Babies – Water animals are amazing in so many ways but how do the babies learn to swim and live in water? This week we will learn how baby water animals are raised in ponds, rivers and even the ocean!

Egg-citing! – Did you know chickens aren’t the only one that lay eggs? There are egg layers all around us from ostrich to ladybugs, let’s learn about who they are and why they are Eggstraordinary!

Wonders of the Night – Shhhh…Who made that noise? Whose eyes are glowing in the trees? Some fascinating animals come out at night. Come discover how they find food, stay safe and get around in the dark.
Camp Dates: June 9-13, July 14-18

Red Panda ranger Camp – Become a Red Panda Ranger at the Blank Park Zoo! Red pandas are endangered animals but a Zoo favorite.  During Ranger Camp you will earn your badge by learning what it takes to be a panda and what we can do to help them in the wild.

Pollination Party! – Bees, butterflies and bats are fascinating creatures and they are all important for our forests, crops and gardens. Let’s learn about how pollinators help us and how we can help our pollinating friends. We will end the week with a party for our friends and family to celebrate some of  Iowa’s VIPs (Very Important Pollinators)!!

I’m Buggin’ for Bugs! – Bugs can be creepy and crawly but they are always cool! Compare the smallest to the biggest bugs in the world, learn about the most colorful to the most poisonous bugs and get an up-close look at Blank Park Zoo’s interesting insects!

Wild and Wacky Water – Slip’n slide your way through the Zoo as we discover the importance of water all around the world. Find out about different sources of water on Earth and how the animals at the Blank Park Zoo use water to stay cool in the summer. We will stay cool with water games and activities all week long!

Explore Asia – Snow leopards, Red pandas, and tigers are all from the amazing continent of Asia. This week we will learn about the animals, landscape and culture that make up this beautiful land.
Camp Dates: June 9-13, July 14-18

Gross Me Out - Did you know a gecko can lick its own eyeball? Discover what's slimy, slippery, sloppy, and stinky at the Blank Park Zoo! We'll learn all about the animals at the Zoo and some of their no-so-pleasant quirks. Join us for a week of mess mayhem and foul fun as we uncover what's so gross about the Zoo!
Camp Dates: June 16-20, July 21-25
Cost: $180 member/$257.14 non-member

Creatures of the Night – The night is full of creatures, even if you don’t always see them. During this camp we will learn all about the nocturnal animals that thrive at night. As an additional option, you can spend the night at the zoo! See details below.

Optional Overnight for Night Crawlers Camp – Spend the night at the zoo. Instead of going home Thursday, stay the night with your fellow campers! Do extra fun activities and sleep in the Discovery Center overlooking the rainforest.
Date: June 26, July 31
Cost: $45 per camper. Dinner and breakfast will be provided.

In Our Backyard – This camp is all about the awesome creatures in our backyard. Between the little bugs in pond water to the tallest trees in the forest, our backyards are alive and waiting to be explored. We will take a field trip to Fort Des Moines Park to look high and low at all the amazing wildlife right in the Zoo’s backyard!

Wonderful Water – This wonderful, wet week will wow you with all things water! We will visit the seals, sea lions, penguins, aquariums and get a behind the scenes look at how the keepers keep our water-loving friends healthy in their underwater habitats. And we will make sure we stay wet with lots of water activities!
Camp Dates: July 7-11, August 11-15

Photo Safari – Have you ever noticed how pictures sometimes can tell a story? Can you capture details of animals with the click of a button? Gain inspiration for your own photographs by exploring some famous photos of animals in the wild. This week we will create a blog to share the animal’s stories and feature your work.
Camp Dates: June 16-20

Toys for Toads - *Please note that this camp is for Grades 5-6 and Grades 7.* One of the most important jobs of a zookeeper is to keep the animals in their care busy and happy. The keepers provide all sorts of toys, puzzles, smells and things to look at to keep the animals thinking. This week we will make toys for all the animals from the tigers to the toads!
Camp Dates: June 30-July 3 (No camp on July 4)
Cost: Pro-rated for 4 days: $144 members/$205.71 for non-members

Zoo Tycoon – Have you ever wondered how YOU would run a zoo? Well, now’s your chance! This week, you’ll learn all about how Blank Park Zoo operates and then work as a team to design your very own zoo! You’ll meet some of the staff and animals at the Zoo and discover lots of behind-the-scenes secrets that make the Blank Park Zoo Iowa’s wildest adventure!
Camp Dates: July 14-18
Cost: $180 member/$257.14 non-member

Wild Kingdom –The world is filled with creatures of all kinds. This camp will highlight the vast animal kingdom and the adaptations animals have to live in their environments. We will end the week with an overnight trip to Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and sleep in the Wild Kingdom Pavilion!
Camp Dates: July 21-25

MythBusters: Zoo Edition- Are bats really blind? Are camel humps really full of water? Join us as we confirm or bust some of the well-known animal myths. We'll tour the Zoo and talk with zookeepers to find out the truth behind the animal lore. We will research, write and record our very own Mythbusters episode that focuses on the animals that are found at the Blank Park Zoo!
Camp Dates: August 4-8

Junior Zookeeper -Want to learn how to be a zookeeper? Making diets, cleaning and keeping animals enriched are all part of what a zookeeper does every day. You will get a chance to tour some behind-the-scenes areas and help take care of the very animals that you get to see every day at the zoo!
Camp Dates: June 23-27, July 7-11

Animal Careers – Do you want to work with animals when you grow up? Each day during this camp you will get the chance to talk to a person who works with animals. A vet, a zookeeper, an animal trainer and more! This is a great time to learn about opportunities in the animal field!

Things to Know

Age and Grade Level
It is important to us that your child receives the best experience. As such, we hope that you will help us by honoring the age and grade level guidelines. Each camp is for children entering that grade level in the fall of 2014. Your child MUST be potty-trained to be a part of the camp.

Supervised Additional Care
Before and after care is available from 7:30 to 9:00 am and from 4:00 to 5:30 pm for full-day campers age 5-6 and in grades 1 to 7. It is not an extension of the camp. The cost for each supervised additional care session is $5/day am, and $5/day pm. A $5 late fee will be charged for every 15 minutes after 5:30 pm. There are no refunds for cancelling prepaid sessions.

Snack and Lunch
A snack will be provided for our half-day and full-day camps. Children participating in a full-day camp will need to bring a sack lunch. Please note that refrigeration for lunches will not be provided. For your convenience, we are also offering lunches through the Zoo. You will receive more information about the Blank Park Zoo lunch options/menu in your confirmation package.  Lunch is $6.25/day or $25 for the week.

Drop-off/Pick-up
Check-in for each class begins 10 minutes before the start of class. Please honor our pick-up time.
For the safety of your children, we will only release your child to the person/s you list at drop-off each day. If there are emergencies/last-minute changes, please notify our camp instructors.
3-4 Year Olds: Drop-off and Pick-up will occur at the Banker's Trust Classroom. Directional signs will be posted to direct you to the classroom.
5-6 Year Olds: Drop-off will occur in Pavilion 1, located next to the Bald Eagle Exhibit. For half day pick-up, please enter the zoo through Admissions and you will be directed to the Dove Room in the Discovery Center. Full day pick-up will occur in Pavilion 1.
Grades 1 to 7: drop-off and pick-up will occur in Pavilion 1, located next to the Bald Eagle Exhibit.

Registration, Confirmation and Cancellation
Pre-registration is required for all classes. All registrations must be received at least 7 days before class starts. After we process your registration, we will send you a confirmation letter. Please note that your registration is not confirmed until you receive this confirmation letter. Cancellations will not receive a refund.

T-shirts will be available for purchase the week of camp.
