Description Wied’s marmosets measure between 8 to 13 inches and they weigh up to 25 ounces. They have distinctive white tufts on the ears. Adaptation/Behavior: Wied’s marmoset is one of the most primitive monkeys. They do not have prehensile tails and their thumbs are not opposable. They have claws on all of their digits except for their big toes, which have nails. They also lack the ability to change their facial expressions. They are territorial and mark with scent from scent pads that are located near their wrists. They will chew notches out of branches and then mark on the chewed spot. Courtship/Breeding: It is common for Wied’s marmosets to have twin births and the infants are usually carried on the backs of their father and only go to their mothers for nursing. Gestation is about 134 days. Conservation: Wied’s marmosets are currently at low risk. However rapid deforestation may pose as a threat.
