DES MOINES, Iowa (July 12, 2011) Iowa’s Blank Park Zoo is set to open its first major exhibit in ten years. The David Kruidenier Australia Adventure will open Saturday, July 16 at 10 a.m. The exhibit tells the story of Australia and features a journey into an Australian farm more commonly referred to in Australia as a ‘station.’
“From the moment you step into the exhibit, you will be immersed into the culture of Australia,” said Mark Vukovich, CEO of Blank Park Zoo. “Not only will you see some very interesting animals, you’ll learn about the Aboriginal people, see a didgeridoo and paint a boomerang.”
The exhibit introduces you to a cassowary, a very large flightless bird with a colorful head. Returning to the exhibit will be wallabies, emu, kookaburras and lorikeets as well as birds in a walk through aviary. In addition, the train station has been transformed into Walleroo Crossing.
Walleroo Crossing will also feature a mob of bachelor wallabies which will be used for a breeding program.
“A Day Down Under” festivities will be held from 10 a.m. until noon and will include:
- A free Union Pacific train whistle for the first 300 children.
- An appearance by The Roosters, Des Moines’ very own Aussie Rules Football Team
- Didgeridoo and pan flute music of Wes Rick and Mak Dervo
- Sampling of Australia’s favorite snack – Vegemite
- Zookeeper Chats
Blank Park Zoo would like to thank the Kruidenier Family, the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, Union Pacific, John Deere and all the donors to the Wild About Animals Capital Campaign that have helped fund this and many other projects.
