Free Admission to the Blank Park Zoo on Friday, July 29

DES MOINES, Iowa (July 25, 2011) Iowa’s Blank Park Zoo will open its admission gates for free for one day on Friday, July 29 in order to raise money and generate excitement for the upcoming Africa expansion project. The Zoo is asking for a donation of at least $10 per family to go towards the construction project.
“At the Big Dig, you’ll learn about the Africa construction project – the new animals, exhibits and features coming to Blank Park Zoo,” said Mark Vukovich, CEO of Blank Park Zoo. “This is an exciting time for Blank Park Zoo, and the impact this will have on future generations.”
Blank Park Zoo recently opened the David Kruidenier Australia Adventure and is currently in the final stages of completing a new Seal and Sea Lion pool.
Construction on the $9.5 million exhibit is scheduled to begin after Labor Day.
“Big Dig” activities include:
- Suggested donation of $10 or more per family
- First 1,500 kids get free construction hat
- Help us dig dirt for Africa
- Go on a scavenger hunt around the zoo
- Climb on construction equipment
- Get your picture taken with a meerkat
- Enjoy African music, storytelling and conservation talks throughout the day
- Learn about Jaama Kwa Africa plans
Blank Park Zoo hours on Friday, July 29 will be 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

The Blank Park Zoo, Iowa’s WILDEST Adventure, is open every day 10am-5pm. Fridays until 8pm, now through September 2. Daily admission is $10.95 for adults, $5.95 for children under 12, and $8.95 for seniors and active military. The Zoo is located at 7401 SW 9th St., Des Moines, IA 50315.
