Two New Harbor Seals Fly to the Zoo

Nov 1, 2011

DES MOINES, Iowa (Nov. 1, 2011) - Two new harbor seals recently made a 2,500 mile journey from Vancouver to their new home at Blank Park Zoo. So how does a seal make such a journey? FedEx.

“As you might expect moving two large marine mammals from one country to another is not only a complicated process, but also a costly one, so we are thankful FedEx donated their services,” said Mark Vukovich, CEO of Blank Park Zoo.

“FedEx absolutely, positively cares about our global community, and we use our resources to help thousands of organizations throughout the world. Our aircraft and vehicles deliver tons of aid for disaster and rescue.  We are pleased to donate the seal transportation, at the request of Blank Park Zoo for the community,” said Lisa Daniel, a FedEx senior communications specialist.

The animals, named Meru and Ross, were rescued, and were deemed non-releasable by Canadian authorities and had lived at the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre for about a year. The animals were in need of a permanent home when Blank Park Zoo wanted to add more seals for the newly constructed seal and sea lion pool.

Two keepers accompanied the animals during the flight, making sure the animals were well cared for and occasionally used a squirt bottle to spray them with water.

“The whole transfer process was smooth and the stress to the animals was minimal thanks to FedEx and keepers from the rescue centre,” said Keiko Sampson, animal supervisor at Blank Park Zoo. “They seemed to fly better than some humans I’ve seen.”

The harbor seals must complete a required quarantine period before they can be released on exhibit with the other pinnipeds at Blank Park Zoo.
