Join the "wildest" team in Iowa at the Zoo's job fair Saturday
By Anne Shimerdla, Director of Operations & Education
Did you know that the Blank Park Zoo hires about 70 additional staff during the summer months? You can be a part of our “wild” team! The Zoo is hosting a summer job fair tomorrow – Saturday, March 16 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The Zoo is a perfect place for people of all ages and experiences to work for the summer. There are numerous opportunities in all areas of guest services. We hire a diverse work force – from high school and college students looking for a summer job, to moms that need a few hours to get out of the house, to retirees that want to stay busy and make a little extra income.
Me with a few special Zoo visitors last summer.
I personally love summer at the Zoo and feel privileged to have such a “wild” job. My favorite part of summer is interacting with the families and children that come to enjoy the animals. Seeing the excitement on children’s faces as they watch the sea lions, the smiles as they touch a tortoise or the joy as they ride the carousel makes all the hard work worth it.
Most of the summer positions work in the various attractions around the Zoo. Cashiers are located around the Zoo such as the train, carousel, admissions and various retail outlets. Most positions are located outside. Employees must be able to work with cash, communicate with guests and stand for long periods of time. We are particularly interested in finding employees that have good customer service skills, a professional appearance and smile easily.

Zoo employees work hard, but we also have fun! Some of the benefits of working at the Zoo in the summer are:
- Being outside and enjoying the summer weather while working,
- Meeting lots of people,
- Making new friends, and
- Most importantly – seeing all the animals each day!

Join us for tomorrow’s job fair! Anyone looking for a summer job is encouraged to stop by. If you cannot make the job fair, applications are on the Zoo’s website and can be turned in at any time during regular Zoo hours – 10 am to 4 pm. Work in a wild adventure this summer!
