HOME SCHOOL DAY 2014

April 22 - Earth Day

Join us for Earth Day at Blank Park Zoo and learn all about amazing pollinators and the key role that they play in the environment!  It will be a fun filled day full of games, crafts, activities, and meet-and-greet with zookeepers and conservationists.

Everyone is encouraged to pre register due to limited space.  The fee includes all games, activities, encounters, and giveaways that may happen during the day.  Pre registration prices are as follows: Member prices are $5 per adult, and $3 per child.  Non-Member prices are $8 per adult and $5 per child.

This is a family friendly event, and all ages are encouraged to join us.  Kids 2 & under are free.  This is a parent led day, with activities and encounters set up around the zoo, that the families can roam around and do at their own pace.   Activities will run from 10am-2pm, and the zoo closes at 4pm.

HOME SCHOOL SAFARI

DESCRIPTION

Home School Safari Classes are drop off classes held on the 2nd Thursday of every month from October thru April from 1:30 to 3:45. Classes are split into 3 age ranges; 5-6 year olds, 7-9 year olds, and 10-12 year olds.

Each class will have a different theme with fun activities, plenty of learning   opportunities, and a visit from some animal friends.  Sign up for one class or all the classes, registration will close the Monday before each class. Cost is $16 per child per class for Non-Members and $12.80 per child per class for Members.

CLASS SCHEDULE

September 12th –Monkeys VS Apes— Monkeys and Apes have always been confused for one another.  In this class the kids will get to see all of the zoo’s primates, and learn how to tell if it is a monkey or an ape.  This class will be full of monkey’n around!

October 10th –Creepy Crawlers— Roaches, Beetles, Tarantulas, and more!  Join us for this class as we learn all about some of the world’s invertebrates, and the important roles they serve.

November 14th –Barnyard Buddies— We will be exploring the animals you can find in Kids Kingdom in this class.  Learn how we take care of them, where they originate from, and the benefits people receive from them.

December 12th –Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones— Sometimes we forget that animals other than chickens lay eggs.  We will learn about all the different animals that lay eggs, different size and texture of eggs, and how strong they can be.

January 9th –Red Panda”monium”— Let’s get a little wild and crazy learning about Red Pandas!  Learn all about this amazing Asian animal, and things that are being done to try and save them and their habitats.

February 13th –Wild About You — Come spend the day before Valentine’s Day learning about animals in love!

March 13th –You Eat What?— Yum! Yum! Yum! Come learn what animals at the zoo eat, and how it may compare to the same kind of animal in the wild.

April 10th –Wild Wetlands— Wetlands are a very important habitat system and is home to lots of different species of animals.  In class we will learn about what we can do to help conserve this habitat and help the animals that live there.

ZOOKEEPER FOR A DAY

DESCRIPTION

Zookeeper for a Day is for children ages 12-17. The kids will be helping the zookeepers take care of their animals from 10-12pm. This will include diet preparation, cleaning, enrichment, and other daily activities. Be prepared to get dirty! Most areas clean with hoses, so make sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes that they don’t mind getting wet (rain boots would be best).  There is only room for 8 kids in each of these classes and registration will be first come, first serve.

Cost is $25 per child per class for Non-Members and $20 per child per class for members.

CLASS SCHEDULE

September 12th – Hoof Stock Mammals & Birds—We will start with a short discussion about all the different zoo careers, how to get into the field, and how to get experience.  From there they will get to spend 45 minutes with the Hoof Stock Mammal Team that takes care of rhinos and giraffes and 45 minutes with the Birds Team that takes care of approximately 600 birds.

October 10th – Education Animals & Aquariums—We will start by talking about the importance of nutrition and the different diets the animals are fed at the zoo.  From there they will get to spend 45 minutes with the Education Team that takes care of about 40 species of animals ranging from a tarantula, to a macaw, and 45 minutes with the Aquatics Team that takes care of the fish and amphibians.

March 13th – Reptiles & Australian Mammals—We will start with a discussion about enrichment, and what zookeepers do to keep the animals happy and doing natural behaviors.  From there they will get to spend 45 minutes with the Bird Team that takes care of the terrestrial reptiles like the Aldabra Tortoises, and 45 minutes with the Small Mammal Team that takes care of the mammals in Australia, like the Wallabies.

April 10th – Kids Kingdom & Aquatic Mammals/Birds—We will start with a discussion about training with zoo animals, and the benefits it has to the animal and their care.  From there they will spend 45 minutes with the Small Mammal Team that takes care of the animals in Kids Kingdom, like the goats and llamas, and 45 minutes with the Aquatics Team that takes care of the Sea Lion,Otters, and Penguins.
