Mar 15, 2012

DES MOINES, Iowa (March 13, 2012) – Iowa’s Blank Park Zoo is set to open three new areas this Saturday, March 17. These areas include the Rocky Shores Seal and Sea Lion pool, a new entrance through Blank Park and a temporary Ice Age Mammals exhibit.

“The seal and sea lion pool is a new centerpiece for Blank Park Zoo. The pool is a huge upgrade both for the animals and our visitors,” said Mark Vukovich, CEO of Blank Park Zoo.

This $1.3 million pool features several new guest amenities including underwater viewing of the animals, signs and interactive displays and a new overlook into the pool. Features that will benefit the animals include two giant shade structures, a deeper pool, and a redesigned island that will be used for demonstrations. Two young harbor seals will be joining the animals this spring. The animals are currently being acclimated to their new home and not yet ready to go on exhibit.

Ice Age Mammals also opens on March 17 and will be at the Zoo through June 10. The exhibit features a woolly mammoth, saber tooth tigers, megatherium and others. The exhibit is free with regular admission and free for Blank Park Zoo members.

Guests will also be encouraged to enter Blank Park Zoo through the new entrance, located approximately one block north of the current entrance on SW 9th street.

The redesigned park features a new waterfall and pond, a new shelter house, overlook, picnic area, playground and area for a future animal exhibit.
