Serving human health needs while preserving the environment
Borneo is an island in Southeast Asia. It holds the world’s oldest rainforest and its biodiversity is incomparable to other parts of the world. Many species found in Borneo cannot be found anywhere else. While numerous conservation efforts have been made, more recently it has been determined that the support of the local Borneo communities is vital to successfully protecting its biodiversity.
Precious animals, such as Sumatran Rhino, Proboscis Monkey, Slow Loris and Pygmy Elephant, are in danger of losing lives through illegal animal trade and illegal logging of their habitats. The human residents of Borneo are unaware of how special and endangered their animal neighbors are.
Luckily, for all residents of the island, Health in Harmony has stepped into action to inspire local villagers and promote the health of the forest alongside the health of its human residents. This organization provides healthcare to residents who help reforestation projects and do not participate in illegal logging. More than 15,000 patients have been served in on-site and mobile clinics.
More recently, with the support of Blank Park Zoo, Health in Harmony has created an educational program geared toward Borneo’s children, hoping to educate them of the endangered animals that share their land. Much like the many education programs offered at Blank Park Zoo, we hope through hands-on education Health in Harmony can protect the future of Borneo’s diverse rainforest by inspiring local kids to protect it. Protecting the world’s oldest rainforest and its many rare animals.
