Blank Park Zoo’s Plant.Grow.Fly.  and partners are pleased to announce the 2015 Monarch Festival! The Festival will be held at Blank Park Zoo on Sunday, September 20 from 12-4 PM.

The Festival will highlight the miraculous migration of the monarch butterfly and will offer everything from traditional Mexican dancing, puppet shows, monarch tagging and habitat education to free seeds to start your own butterfly garden, crafts and activities and even a Bug Parade! 

Join us we celebrate the monarch’s journey from Canada, through Iowa, to the mountains of Mexico! 

Event will go on, RAIN or SHINE!




Bug Parade 
Join us for our 2nd Annual BUG PARADE! Let’s send off the Monarchs on their journty to Mexico! Come dressed as your favorite insect, wear your wings, your orange and black, antennae or make your costume at the Zoo! We will have a special costume-making booth with all the supplies available – free of charge! There will be special prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place BEST COSTUMES provided by WHOLE FOODS.

Mexican Dancing
Los Ninos del Tepeyac - Danza Folklorica is a group dedicated to learning and teaching about the Mexican culture through dance. This group will be performing at the Festival and there will be a chance for participation!

Monarch Tagging and Insect Hunts
Our friends at Polk County Conservation will be here leading Insect Hunts and a Monarch Tagging event! They will show us how to safely catch monarch butterflies to attach a tag. If these special monarchs are found in Mexico, they can help scientists track the migration! 

Plant.Grow.Fly. Gardeners Photo Contest

Puppet Shows
Families and kids of all ages will be encouraged to take part in an interactive performance workshop called FOLLOW THAT MONARCH! by Carol Taylor's Patchwork Puppets.  

Travel with the monarchs on their momentous and often hazardous journey to their winter home in Mexico. We'll use puppets, props, rhymes, and lots of hands-on creative fun as we tell the migration story of one of our favorite butterflies.

Latino Heritage Festival Booth
The Latino Heritage Festival is Sept 26 and 27 in Des Moines. Stop by their booth to find out more about the Iowa-Latino connection!

Crafts and Activities 
Numerous Plant.Grow.Fly. partners will be here with crafts and activities for families to help us learn about butterflies and the astonishing migrating monarch!

Free Seeds (including Milkweed!) to start your Plant.Grow.Fly. garden!
There will be free seeds available for Festival-goers so you can create your own butterfly oasis in your yard!
