#StomptheStraw

Why reduce plastic straw usage?
  • Single-use plastics, like straws, cannot be recycled and take a long time to breakdown.
  • Straws are among the ten most commonly found items in waterways and oceans.
  • They are harmful to wildlife and their habitats.
  • Our actions here in Iowa have a direct impact on the global environment.
  • Straws create pollution at every stage of their existence from oil drilling, manufacturing, shipping and distribution.
  • According to EcoCycle, in the United States 500 million straws are used EVERY day. That number would fill over 127 school buses. http://www.ecocycle.org/bestrawfree/faqs

Can plastic straws be recycled?

Unfortunately, many single-use plastics cannot be recycled. Reducing the amount of single-use plastics consumed and reusing items are the most effective approaches in keeping plastic out of the environment. For more information about what can/can’t be recycled, check out your local waste disposal system website.

What alternatives are there to single-use plastic straws?
  • Bamboo
  • Glass
  • Hay
  • Metal
  • Paper
  • Pasta
  • Silicone

What about other single-use disposable items like coffee cups and plastic bags?

We support reusables over wasteful disposable items such as single-use shopping bags, bottled water, coffee cups and to-go containers. To get started, start small, pick one item that you want to change.  Track your progress and make a goal.  Remember it’s not about perfection, it’s an opportunity to learn and strive to reduce plastic waste every day.

What is Blank Park Zoo doing to reduce straws and other one-use plastics?

Blank Park Zoo is straw free. For the safety of our animals and the natural world around us we do not offer straws or lids at our Safari Grill or Macaw Café.  We also provide water filling stations for you to refill your water bottle.  We also support organizations that work to protect wildlife.
