Job Details

Blank Park Zoo is looking for an experienced zookeeper to bring a variety of skills to our zoo with an emphasis on enrichment, training and husbandry.  This area cares for a diverse collection of animals including Large Cats, Pinnipeds, Otters, Penguins, and several Primate species.  We are seeking a well-rounded candidate that has experience working with dangerous animals and is comfortable training pinnipeds in a free contact environment. The selected candidate for this position will be expected to learn and work with all animals in the area.  

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under supervision, to perform a variety of tasks related to animal care, conservation efforts, grounds and maintenance of zoo facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Completes tasks related to all aspects of animal care and welfare: diets and feeding schedules, cleaning and disinfection of enclosures, feeding utensils, etc.; animal enrichment and husbandry training; maintenance of zoo facilities and exhibits. 
  • Responsible for completing daily animal records
  • Follows all protocols to maintain safe conditions for staff and animals
  • Reports any issues to the Area Supervisor
  • Abides by sound ethical practices of caring for animals and conforms to the AZA code of ethics
  • Involved in professional networking, public relations, media contacts, public speaking and assistance in development and fund raising activities. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May be assigned animal care interns, seasonal staff or volunteers.
 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previous work experience in animal related field preferred
  2. Ability to handle a flexible workload with a variety of assignments.
  3. Must be able to operate independently, exercise initiative, and demonstrate capacity for detail and follow-up.
  4. Must be able to maintain work hours that will serve the needs of the Foundation
  5. Must be a positive, effective team member and be able to establish professional working relationships.
  6. Clear communication skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE 

Completion of two years of college with major course work in biology, zoology, or related natural science and one year of experience in the care of animals in a zoological setting OR any equivalent combination in which education and experience are interchangeable at the rate of one year of education for one year of experience. 

LANGUAGE ABILITY 

Ability to communicate effectively to all ages of visitors and staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to understand written reports and animal data collection.    

COGNITIVE DEMANDS

Ability to participate in research projects, write appropriate articles, communicate with colleagues, present findings at conferences.

COMPUTER SKILLS

All normal computer business skills (Microsoft office) required.

COMPETENCIES

Understanding of modern zoological management, ability to research all applicable topics.

CERTIFICATES

Iowa motor vehicle license
