Status:  Non-Exempt

Position Purpose

The Area Supervisor is a working supervisor responsible for the management of day-to-day operations of a specific area of animal care department. In general, the supervisor must oversee personnel and assure adherence to established zoo protocols and practices, focus on communication within and outside the department and mentor and develop team members into leaders. The supervisor must make knowledgeable decisions and ensure the best animal care and welfare practices are established, implemented and practiced for all the species in the department.

  • Responsible for the implementation and supervision of all aspects of animal and exhibit care for species encompassed in the area. Aware of and ensures compliance with USDA/AZA standards and AZA codes of ethics.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Animal Care, CEO, and all other Area Supervisors to accomplish the goals of the animal care department (animal care protocols, biosecurity, species specific diets, collection planning, SSP, animal escape drills and population management)
  • Ensures all animal care protocols, training program, enrichment protocols and record keeping protocols are followed by and satisfactorily completed by all animal keepers, seasonal staff and interns in their area of responsibility.
  • Communicate all animal health related issues to Director of animal care, Veterinarian and the Animal Health team. Ensures administration of any medications or treatment plans per instructions.
  • Determine team member schedule and routines, and adjusts schedule due to short term PTO needs. Approve PTO and bi-weekly timecard.
  • Mentor and develop team members in their area of responsibility by goal setting, setting clear expectations, completing performance evaluations through weekly or bi-weekly one on one conversations.
  • Conduct weekly team meetings, fostering a positive culture of collaboration and professional development.  Attend weekly Animal Management meetings, Animal Health meeting and individual meetings with Director of Animal Care.
  • Involved in professional networking, public relations, media contacts, public speaking and assistance in development and fundraising activities.
  • Collaborate professionally with all other department staff, Volunteer/interns and outside contractors.
  • Participates in all husbandry duties including daily cleaning, diet preparation, feeding, training, enrichment, and daily observations.
  • Responsible for daily observation of animal health and welfare. Determines solutions for animal welfare concerns.
  • Participates in all other aspects of animal care including training, welfare observations, enrichment, record keeping and exhibit maintenance.
  • All other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to stand, walk on even terrain, climb, and utilize manual dexterity to use various tools, machines, and equipment. The incumbent is regularly exposed to all types of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, snow, hail, wind, and rain. Most of the job tasks are completed outside. Cares for dangerous animals.  Some work is required in small and/or confined spaces.  Incumbents are exposed to noisy environments such as mowers and motors.

Required education and experience

  • Four-year college degree, or relevant zoo experience.
  • Three years of paid experience in the zoo field.
  • Previous work experience in animal husbandry and leadership or management, particularly in a zoo setting.
  • Familiar with current AZA/ USDA and animal welfare standards and practices.
  • Significant knowledge of the care and welfare practices for avian and reptile species.

Additional eligibility requirements

  • Must be insurable to drive a zoo vehicle.
  • Must be able to maintain work hours that will serve the needs of the Blank Park Zoo
  • Must be able to operate various equipment, including skid loaders, trailers, and large vehicles.
  • Must be able to maintain calm and act professionally in all situations such as emergencies and guest interactions.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Iowa motor vehicle license
  • First Aid/CPR Training
