The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa is a non-profit organization and home to more than 2,800 animals representing nearly 240 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and is fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research and recreation.
Position Purpose
Oversees the Finance Department including responsible for day-to-day general accounting, cash office, and ensuring financial policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to. Implements and maintains systems of internal controls to ensure security of Zoo assets. Prepares financial reports in compliance with financial policies, U.S. GAAP/FASB, grant requirements and donor restrictions. Provides leadership and guidance to the finance / accounting team.

- Participate as a member of the BPZ Leadership Team in efforts to enhance services and strengthen BPZ’s financial performance.
- Maintain current knowledge of accepted accounting and financial practices and implement best practices, avoiding legal challenges by complying with all legal requirements.
- Manages the accounting team to ensure qualified individuals are in place and trained to manage and perform day-to-day operations in respective areas of responsibility.
- Produce accurate, compliant, and timely financial statements each month and year end.
- Analyze financial information to provide timely decision-making information to BPZ leadership, the Board of Directors, and team members as needed.
- Oversee and support the development of the annual operating budget, providing historical data and assisting with revenue and expense projections.
- Reviews internal departmental processes and procedures; recommends changes that will improve workflow and increase productivity; enforces policies and procedures.
- Ensure financial policies and procedures are followed throughout the organization. Inform management of any issues or concerns; periodically review policies and procedures and recommend changes as appropriate.
- Ensure financial checks and balances are in place organizationally, manage internal audit projects, and support cash office manager with any cash management concerns.
- Recommend changes and/or additions to software systems to improve functionality, processes and internal controls.
- Coordinate annual audits of combined financial statements, retirement plans, tax filings (e.g., 990 prep and sales tax) and worker’s compensation; serves as the primary liaison with independent auditors and regulatory agencies having authority over functional areas of responsibility. (5500s, 1099s)
- Ensure that audit preparation is completed in a timely and accurate manner and that all financial audit issues are addressed.
- Manage day-to-day treasury activities and banking relationships, including lines of credit and debt service.
- Monitor Zoo’s liquidity and recommends actions to ensure solvency.
- Review regulatory and contractual requirements and monitor organizational compliance with critical agreements and covenants.
- Participate in grant budget development and ensure compliance with grant guidelines.
- Maintain accurate schedules for restricted funds, capital assets, campaign gifts, pledges and grants.
- Provide the financial reporting data required for local, state and federal funding as well as private grants.
- Ensure inventory management and controls are in place.
- Ensure vendor management system is in place including completion of vendor forms and tracking of vendor data.
- Oversee the Zoo’s risk management program including annual reporting and renewals for general liability, property, workers’ compensation, etc.
- Work in collaboration with human resources on payroll processing, health benefits, 401k audits and worker’s compensation program, primarily in the areas of funding, compliance, reconciliation, and audit support.
- Ensure timely permit, license, and certification renewals for sound, alcohol, rides, resale certificates, solicitation of contributions, and other required activities.
- Complete annual reporting as required for AZA membership dues, AZA annual business operations analytics, etc.
- Maintain and update accounting records in the fixed asset system for all capital equipment, buildings, exhibits, other fixed assets, land and land improvement purchases for asset tracking and depreciation schedules.
- Participate in contract negotiations, shepherd RFP processes for large organizational commitments and expenditures, and oversee assigned contract management.
- Responsible for administration of select organizational contracts.
- Provide guidance to program and administrative staff in understanding and interpreting financial information.
- Serve as staff liaison to Board of Directors, Treasurer, and Finance Committee to keep everyone apprised of the organization's financial status.
- Provide information on investment performance to the Board of Directors and committees.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
The finance department includes three additional positions that report to the Controller.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit and work at a desk for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and utilize manual dexterity to use computer mouse and keyboard and other office equipment.

Required education and experience
- Four-year college degree in accounting, Master’s degree preferred.
- Extensive knowledge and working experience with GAAP
- Experience with standard accounting and auditing procedures
- Strong proficiency in accounting software and a working knowledge of QuickBooks
- Minimum 5 years of relevant accounting experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience in non-profit accounting preferred
- Supervisory Experience required
Additional eligibility requirements
- Proficient with MS Suite of software products, Excel and Word.
- Strong financial systems management experience, system administration experience preferred
- Must be insurable to drive a zoo vehicle.
- Must be able to maintain work hours that will serve the needs of the Blank Park Zoo, including providing operational coverage and periodically working unexpected shifts.
- Must be able to maintain calm and act professionally in all situations such as emergencies and guest interactions.
