The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa is a non-profit organization and home to more than 2,800 animals representing nearly 240 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and is fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research, and recreation.

Position Purpose

The Events Manager is responsible for managing and leading the events team in the planning and execution of private rentals, fundraising, and special events at Blank Park Zoo including large public events (Wild Lights, Night Eyes, Zoo Brew, etc.). 
 

Requirements

  • Lead, manage, and mentor events team members including the Rental and Sales Supervisor, Public Events Supervisor, Event Coordinator, seasonal event staff, volunteers, and interns.  
  • Manage and oversee logistics and execution of events and rentals, including but not limited to budgets, contracts, schedules, vendors, communication plans, promotion, on-site execution, and post-event analysis 
  • Manage event calendars and timelines in order to ensure all logistics are executed in a timely manner
  • Develop and maintain a strong working and communication relationship with all staff, volunteers, vendors and other key stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to create plans and timelines for the promotion of each event
  • Hire, coordinate schedules, and manage event staff including reviewing and approving payroll
  • Assist in developing event budgets and team goals, monitor team progress towards achievement of established goals, and assist team members in meeting/exceeding revenue and expense goals
  • Maintain Blank Park Zoo’s mission-focused planning in all aspects of event conception, planning, and execution
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

Oversees event operations, which includes planning through execution. Recruits and hires event staff and implements training for new hires. Supervises professional-level positions, volunteers, and interns. Serves as Zoo Manager-on-Duty as needed.  

Work Environment

While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is required to work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions for events, rentals, and tours.  The incumbent may be required to travel to other locations and meetings. This individual may be exposed to computer monitors. The noise level is moderate.

Required education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and three years of professional experience in developing and executing revenue-generating events. 
  • Minimum of three years of experience in customer relations and event management required.
  • Supervisory/management experience required.  
  • Excellent computer business skills are required. 

Additional eligibility requirements

  •  Must be insurable to drive a zoo vehicle. 
  • Must be able to maintain work hours that will serve the needs of the Blank Park Zoo, including evenings and weekends
  • Comprehensive understanding of budgeting and accounting principles.
  • Must be able to maintain calm and act professionally in all situations such as emergencies and guest interactions.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Iowa motor vehicle license
  • First Aid/CPR Training
  • TIPS Alcohol Training
