PURPOSE OF POSITION

To accomplish all aspects of zoo grounds, outdoor and indoor horticulture, and equipment maintenance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Follows all protocols to maintain safe working conditions for staff, visitors and animals.
  • Under supervision, completes tasks related to all aspects of grounds maintenance: grass mowing, weed-eating, leaf raking, trimming, pruning, tree removal, turf maintenance, etc.
  • Provides general labor as required.
  • Supervises volunteers and volunteer groups that work in the horticulture department. Examples of volunteer functions include planting and maintenance of flower gardens, clean-up of leaves and trash on grounds, and occasional light maintenance duties. 
  • Assist in emergency situations as needed (guest or staff illness, weather, etc.)
  • Assist maintenance as needed
  • Other duties as a signed

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Previous work experience in horticulture field preferred.
  2. Ability to handle a flexible workload with a variety of assignments.
  3. Must be able to operate independently, exercise initiative, and demonstrate capacity for detail and follow-up.
  4. Must be able to maintain work hours that will serve the needs of the Foundation
  5. Must be a positive, effective team member and be able to establish professional working relationships.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or ged.

LANGUAGE ABILITY
Ability to communicate effectively to all ages of visitors and staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to understand written reports.

COGNITIVE DEMANDS
Ability to understand timelines and prioritization

COMPUTER SKILLS
All normal computer business skills required

COMPETENCIES
Ability to understand modern grounds management, ability to research all applicable topics.

CERTIFICATES
Iowa motor vehicle license

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Ability to bend, twist, lift >50 pounds, etc. to perform horticulture/maintenance tasks. This includes operating necessary equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
Ability to function outside in all types of weather.
