Grades 6-7

Adventure Camp

Adventure camp is for children entering grade 6-7 in fall 2025. Each camp will include an overnight experience at partnering organizations. Dates and locations vary depending on the camp theme.

June 30 - July 2, 2025

Cost: $270, members save 20%
Big Idea: Blank Park Zoo (AZA Zoos) dedicates itself to the highest level of animal care and management.
Guiding Question: How does the design of exhibits promote the physical and mental well-being of zoo animals?

Learning Outcomes:

Children will DISCOVER

  1. Elements of exhibit design. 
  2. Animal care practices that promote and accommodate the well-being of animals.
  3. Conservation programs that Blank Park Zoo and Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium participate in.

Children will CONNECT

  1. With empathetic concern for animals and the desire to to improve their lives. 
  2. With appreciation or desire  in zoo careers by seeing themselves in the roles that are observed. 
  3. With admiration for a specific animal(s) that live at Blank Park Zoo or Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium.

Children will TAKE ACTION by

  1. Recognizing practices that demonstrate a facility has high standards for animal welfare. 
  2. Teaching others about responsible animal care practices and why keepers train with animals. 
  3. Participating in conservation programs that support better futures for wildlife and/or visiting facilities that support those programs with their revenue like AZA accredited zoos.

 

 

Tentative Schedule

Monday

9 a.m. - Drop off at Blank Park Zoo. Activities and zoo exploration.
Noon - Lunch at Blank Park Zoo. Virtual programming or field trip to Ape Cognition and Conservation Initiative.
4 p.m. - return to Blank Park Zoo for pick-up.

Tuesday

9 a.m. - Drop off at Blank Park Zoo. Virtual program with Elephant Sanctuary.
Noon - Lunch at Blank Park Zoo.
1:30 p.m. - Leave for Kansas City.
5 p.m. - Pizza dinner at KCZA playground. Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium Overnight Experience.

Wednesday

8 a.m. - Breakfast and Zoo Exploration at KCZA.
Noon - Leave KCZA.
12:30 p.m. - Lunch in Liberty, MO.
1 p.m. - Depart for Des Moines.
4 p.m. - return to Blank Park Zoo for pick-up.

August 4 - 8, 2025

Cost: $450, members save 20%
Big Idea: People have personal and cultural connections to animals.
Guiding Question: How are the health of humans, animals, and the environment interconnected? How are you connected to ecosystems?

Learning Outcomes

Children will DISCOVER

  1. Health benefits of being in nature. 
  2. Resources that humans share with wildlife. 
  3. Impacts that humans have on the health of animals and the environment. 
  4. Blank Park Zoo’s connection to humans, animals, and the environment on both local and global scales.

Children will CONNECT

  1. With the value in the opportunity to interact with nature. 
  2. An appreciation for ecosystem services that natural landscapes provide us. 
  3. A sense of importance in the roles that animals play in cultures in the world. 
  4. Personally to wildlife both local and across the world.

Children will TAKE ACTION by

  1. Taking time to learn about sustainable practices and adopting them into their daily lives (eg. reducing single use plastic consumption)
  2. Advocating for the respect of wildlife and native habitats by telling others what they have learned, what they care about, and modeling good stewardship.
  3. Seeking opportunities to interact with nature (eg. visiting Zoos, aquariums, nature centers, parks, ect.)

Monday

9 a.m. - Drop off at Blank Park Zoo. Activities and Zoo exploration.
Noon - Lunch and hike at Fort Des Moines. Community Youth Concepts - Low Ropes Course.
4 p.m. - return to Blank Park Zoo for pick-up.

Tuesday

9 a.m. - Drop off at Blank Park Zoo. Field Trip to Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge.
Noon - Lunch and activities at Thomas Mitchell Park.
4 p.m. - return to Blank Park Zoo for pick-up.

Wednesday

9 a.m. - Drop off at Blank Park Zoo. Field trip to Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.
1 p.m. - Depart for Omaha. Visit Lake Manawa State Park.
5 p.m. - Dinner at Fazoli’s or Golden Corral.
6:30 p.m. - Arrive at Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium for Sleeping Bag Safari.

Thursday

6 a.m. - Wake up call.
7:15 a.m. - Morning tour.
9 a.m. - Breakfast. Zoo exploration time.
Noon - Lunch at HDZA.
1 p.m. - Depart for Des Moines.
4 p.m. - return to Blank Park Zoo for pick-up.

Friday

9 a.m. - Drop off at Blank Park Zoo. Activities and lunch at BPZ. Field Trip to Polk County Park - Polk County Conservation Program. Outdoor recreation.
4 p.m. - return to Blank Park Zoo for pick-up.
