Participation Guidelines

Spring Safari is a drop-off program for children ages 5-9 years of age. It is important to us that your child receives the best experience. As such, we hope that you will help us by honoring the age guidelines.

Please dress children in comfortable, weather appropriate clothing including: coats, hats, close-toed shoes or boots and gloves/mittens. Temperatures permitting, we will spend portions of each day outside exploring the zoo.

Check-in begins at 8:50 am each day. Extended before or after care is not available for Winter Safari.

Drop-off/Pick-up Locations:

  • 5-6 year olds: Waterfall Room
  • 7-9 year olds: Waterlab

For the safety of your children, we will only release your child to the person/s you list as authorized on your registration. If there are emergencies/last-minute changes, please notify instructors at check-in or call 515-974-2588. Please note, a photo ID is required for pick up.

Lunches and Snacks

Children enrolled in camp will need to either bring a sack lunch or purchase a zoo lunch. Please note that refrigeration for lunches will not be provided.  Zoo lunch is $19.50 for the three days.

Lunch Menu:

Monday – Breaded chicken strips, fries and veggie
Tuesday – Cheese pizza, yogurt and fruit

Wednesday – Pork hot dog, chips and fruit

*menu is tentative and subject to change
*side of fruit varies from day to day and may include grapes, apples, oranges or bananas
*side of veggies varies and may include carrots or celery
*each meal will also include a milk or juice drink

Children in camps will receive a morning and an afternoon snack each day (included as part of camp registration-no extra fee).  Snacks might include items such as: bananas, Mandarin oranges, Goldfish crackers, fruit snacks, Cheez-its, or animal crackers (these items are tentative, subject to change, and vary from day to day).
***Food items containing nuts are not served during camp.  However, we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment.  Camp kids often bring their own lunch items containing nuts, and nuts are a regular part of our animal diets.  Please disclose all participant food allergies during registration.  To discuss concerns or request special accommodations, please contact or call 515-974-2556.

Registration, Confirmation and Cancellation

Pre-registration is required for all classes. After your registration is processed, a confirmation email will be sent (please check your spam folder). Your registration is not confirmed until you receive this confirmation.  Call 515-974-2588 if a confirmation email is not received.

If a cancellation is necessary more than two weeks out from the camp start date, Blank Park Zoo will grant a refund for the registration amount minus a $50 processing fee.  Any cancellations requested within two weeks of the camp start date will not receive a refund (if the child is unable to attend, please consider your payment a tax-deductible donation at this time).
