Title: Grey Crowned Cranes as a Powerful Flagship Species for improving Livelihoods of last-mile
Join Blank Park Zoo as we welcome Dr. Adalbert Aine-omucunguzi from the International Crane Foundation (ICF) for a special presentation about the grey crowned cranes. Dr. Aine-omucunguzi will focus on how the International Crane Foundation’s (ICF) interventions to secure cranes, wetlands and catchments are helping to improve the livelihoods of last-mile (forgotten) communities in East Africa. Without ICF’s work to create win-win solutions for cranes and people, such communities would otherwise exacerbate crane habitat degradation in their own quest for survival.
Dr. Adalbert Aine-omucunguzi was born and raised in Uganda. In his role, Dr. Adalbert oversees ICF’s Crane and Wetland conservation work across the East African countries of Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Dr. Adalbert leads a team that implements nature-positive strategies that benefit cranes, wetlands, and communities. Dr. Adalbert is also the Chair of the IUCN’s Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Committee, the Coordinator of Eastern Africa, under the African Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement’s Grey Crowned Crane Single Species Action Plan, and is a member of the IUCN Biodiversity and Family Planning Task Force. He holds a PhD in Natural Resource Management from Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
