Dear Zoo Supporter,
Imagine that. You’re part of the Zoo Pride! Blank Park Zoo is very excited to announce our newest arrivals, three African lion cubs! Two females and one male arrived on November 14, weighing 1.46 kg, 1.37 kg, and 1.2 kg. The arrival of the cubs is a first-time birth for mother “Neema” and father “Deuce.” As a first-time mother, Neema has been avery attentive and protective mother to the cubs.
As a vulnerable species, the African lion is at a “tipping point” in the wild — meaning that deaths, mostly due to poaching and loss of habitat, will soon out number births. Both the African and Asian lion species are perilously close to extinction. The rate of their decline is truly astounding. Less than 40% of the 2012 wild population remains — an estimated 20,000 animals. The captive zoo population plays a role in survival of the species, but Blank Park Zoo has partnered with the Ruaha Carnivore Project to secure the species’ future in the wild. With less than 20,000 African lions left in the world, please use this celebrated birth to raise your awareness and bring attention to this critical wildlife situation.
