Seal Pup Naming Donation

VOTE NOW for the seal pup name!

Greetings from the Blank Park Zoo, Iowa’s only Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums accredited Zoo! We are reaching out because we have some incredible news to share!
Blank Park Zoo is very excited to announce our newest arrival, a male seal pup!

A male seal pup was born Saturday, August 4. The arrival of the pup is a first-time birth for mother “Meru” and father “Ross.” As a first-time mother, Meru has been very attentive and protective. Seals are semiaquatic mammals with a sleek, barrel-like body and fins. Their winged fins make them part of category of animals known as pinnipeds.  There are three different families in the pinnipeds group: true seals, fur seals and sea lions, and walrus. A female seal, called a cow, gives birth to one pup about once a year on land. The pups are nursed between four days and one month. Some seal species have been hunted almost to extinction in some parts of the world.

Do YOU want to name our newest Zoo animal?

YOU have the opportunity to submit a name for our new seal pup! A gift of $50 or more, along with a chosen name, enters you into our naming contest. You may submit three names for $100! Send your donation, along with your name idea(s) and your contact information (name, address, phone and email) to Blank Park Zoo, attn: Development, at 7401 SW 9th St., Des Moines, IA 50315 or give online at www.blankparkzoo.com. Postal entries must be postmarked on or before August 25 or submitted online by noon on August 29. A Zoo committee will select name finalists and post them online August 30. The public may vote for the winner, to be announced September 7. For training purposes, keepers would appreciate one to two syllable names be suggested. If you have additional questions, please contact the Blank Park Zoo Development department at 515-974-2547 or email development@blankparkzoo.org.

The captive zoo population plays a role in survival of many species, and Blank Park Zoo is proud to be a leader in securing the future of many species, such as the Harbor Seal.
Contributions from supporters like you will continue these efforts!

As always, thank you for supporting Iowa’s only Zoo---it truly does make a difference.

Sincerely,

Mark Vukovich, President/CEO
