A male seal pup was born Saturday, August 4. The arrival of the pup is a first-time birth for mother “Meru” and father “Ross.” As a first-time mother, Meru has been very attentive and protective. Seals are semiaquatic mammals with a sleek, barrel-like body and fins. Their winged fins make them part of category of animals known as pinnipeds. There are three different families in the pinnipeds group: true seals, fur seals and sea lions, and walrus. A female seal, called a cow, gives birth to one pup about once a year on land. The pups are nursed between four days and one month. Some seal species have been hunted almost to extinction in some parts of the world.
