Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Night Eyes, Iowa’s Merry not Scary Halloween event!
You are welcome to wear a costume. When selecting a costume, please remember the following:
Please park in the zoo’s main parking lot. If you are volunteering with other people, please try to arrive together or carpool.
When you arrive for your shift please come to the Discovery Center Conference Center to check in and get your assignment.
You will be able to sign up for an assignment using the Volunteer Spot link. Please note: there may be times we need to reassign you to another area. We appreciate your flexibility while volunteering. We will have the following opportunities for volunteers:
Zone Captains – Must be 18 years or older. Zone Captains are in charge of one of three zones around the zoo. Each zone has candy treat stations and activities.
Candy Runners – Must be 13 years old or older. Assist the Candy Truck coordinator and deliver candy refill requests. Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. and work a hand cart.
Candy Treat Stations – Must be 13 years old or older. Hand out 1 piece of candy/drink/treat per child/adult.
Specialized Costume Areas – Must be 13 years or older. Dress up as a "specialized" character and stay at the themed station! These areas provide guests with a great photo opportunity! We will supply the costumes, but if you have one that fits the theme you are more than welcomed to wear it, just no masks please!
Theme area include Pirate Ship, Wizard of Oz – you will need to provide your own costume, need to be kid friendly and weather accommodating.
Mascot costumes characters & guides: Mascot costumes cover your head and body and will have a guide dressed up to fit the theme to help you navigate the crowds! Mascots include; Red Panda, Wallaby, Lion.
Fun Zone – Must be at least 13 years old or older. Help monitor the bounce house area and answer guest’s questions.
Night Eyes Greeters – Must be 13 years or older. Hand out candy treat bags & maps to the guests.
Volunteer Room Attendant – Must be 16 years or older. Manage volunteer snack area & supervise volunteer room during event.
The following shifts are available during Night Eyes:
October 17 - 20, 2024: 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.
October 24 - 27, 2024: 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Volunteers must stay at assigned area until they are officially released by Zoo Staff.
Snacks, water, and hot beverages will be available to volunteers throughout their shift in the volunteer check in area. Volunteers should not eat the treats designated for Night Eyes guests. We encourage volunteers to bring a refillable water bottle with them to take to their station!
All volunteers must be at least 13 years of age. Volunteers under 13 will not be allowed to work the event. Please see job assignments for specific age requirements.
All volunteers will receive a confirmation email the week before the event.
