What It Takes to Operate Blank Park Zoo

What does it mean to be an active member of Blank Park Zoo? Who are the over 13,000 households that make up the loyal and passionate member base of Blank Park Zoo? They are animal-loving people who share the same understanding of the importance of inspiring an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research, and recreation. Through bringing their families to the Zoo regularly to visit their favorite wild friends, attending member events like Pizza and PJ’s with Santa, and by sharing what they learn at the Zoo with those around them, our members are the driving force behind all of our efforts to save wildlife at home and abroad. Bert and Michelle Zimmerman and their three kids Jacob, Abby, and Miles exemplify what it takes to be active Blank Park Zoo members.

The Zimmerman’s live in Urbandale and have been in central Iowa since 2001. When looking for a place where they could take their kids to have fun and to learn about wildlife conservation and the importance of philanthropy, they found Blank Park Zoo. Their first visit to the Zoo was when their oldest son, Jacob, was just a baby. They really enjoyed their experience and thought that it was the perfect Zoo for them.

Since then they have been members for almost ten years, have generously supported the zoo by adopting some of their favorite Zoo animals every year, have attended Summer Safari and other education camps, and have attended many of the Zoo’s events such as Eggstravaganza and Night Eyes. Their kids have grown up with the Zoo and have learned many things about wildlife, conservation, and the importance of philanthropy through their many connections as members. They love learning about the animals at Blank Park Zoo through their adoption packages each year; and they look forward to adopting new wild friends. Bert and Michelle wanted to instill in them the value of giving back from an early age, so they really embraced the Adopt an Animal program as a way to do this.

The Zimmerman family shows what it means to be an active member of Blank Park Zoo, and how our member base exemplifies what it takes to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research, and recreation; and Blank Park Zoo thanks them for that.
